When "Christians" hide behind godliness in order to further their own agenda, it is truly tragic. Jesus referred to the Pharisees who were guilty of this as hypocrites and vipers. They often brought up the law of God as if they were trying to protect it. Their true colors are revealed in John 11:47b-48(NIV):
"What are we accomplishing?" they asked. "Here is this man performing many miraculous signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him,They weren't so concerned for the truth of God as they were their "place and nation." It was all about them and what they would lose. Unfortunately, many of us live today as if the church is for us. How tragic! Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. As New Testament churches, that should be our mission as well.
and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."
